Project of the Week: Waterfront Place Apartments
In bringing housing to the Port of Everett for the first time-within the 65-acre mixed-use development, Waterfront Place-we faced the challenge of designing apartments to fit into a master plan which also included hospitality, office, retail, and light-industrial uses.
For that reason, we worked to design the two-building, 247,000-square foot, 266-unit Waterfront Place Apartments project within the context of the larger development's goals. The Port of Everett invested in new roadway access and new public spaces, including a public dock, to create a vibrant destination waterfront. One goal was to encourage pedestrian activity, which we accomplished with benches and landscape features along the promenade, and street-level patios and stoops leading residents directly to sidewalks. Another goal, to maximize water views, was resolved through strategic design. Water and plaza views to the west are visible through the buildings from the east, as well as from the many private and public roof decks created by the fourth-floor setbacks.
Finally, we designed both four-story buildings in keeping with the entire development's deft integration of historical and nautical themes, to ensure the buildings will integrate smoothly as the project progresses.
