The PSS Prefontaine Headhouse Improvements project emerged from the need to resolve persistent maintenance difficulties and ongoing safety issues caused by people climbing on the structure. These challenges guided the design phase toward solutions that preserve the iconic headhouse while improving access, including safer roof entry for maintenance and better functioning entry gates. Design interventions such as updating the existing gate hardware and replacing plexiglass with wire mesh were chosen to maintain the character of the structure, increase visibility, reflect more light through the station, and highlight both the architecture and existing public art. Upgrading the elevator access gates further improves security while bringing accessibility features up to current standards. As construction gets underway, the project moves forward with a thoughtful balance of safety, maintainability, and preservation, supporting long term stewardship of this important public asset.
