The South Hill Asian Center transforms a former Toys "R" Us into a vibrant community hub that combines a full-scale Asian market with a dynamic food court. The project’s biggest challenges ensuring smooth customer flow between shopping and dining and meeting strict code requirements for a hybrid retail–restaurant space shaped every design decision.

From the start, the goal was to create a welcoming identity that clearly signals this is something new for the community. The redesigned entry provides a fresh, modern look, distinguishing the building from its big-box past and establishing a strong first impression. Inside, the layout guides visitors seamlessly from market aisles to the food court, where small kiosks offer space for local restaurant tenants.

Cohesion was key: the exterior improvements, interior finishes, and food court design all work together to create a clean, unified atmosphere that feels both inviting and flexible. By combining thoughtful planning with adaptable design, the South Hill Asian Center delivers on the client’s goal to introduce a part grocery, part gathering place that celebrates culture and community in Puyallup.
